Looking for a House? Why HGTV is Not Your Best Friend?
East valley Team memberKristin LaVanway talks about HGTV may not be your best friend when you decide to go shopping for your East Valley home.
So, you’ve decided to become a homeowner…congratulations! Buying a house is a big task, so do your research and be informed. But one place you may want to stay away for a while is the channel on your TV that carries HGTV…when it comes to buying a house, you need a strong does of reality and you are not going to get that from reality TV.
First when you watch HGTV they get three houses to choose from. In real life there will be closer to 300 homes. Go shopping, compare, don’t think you need to make the right choice after just a few houses, it may take 20 or so houses before you decide.
When you buy a house on HGTV it takes 30 minutes. Escrow takes 30 days not 30 minutes so they give you an unrealistic representation of what the home buying process is. Most of the problems happen during the escrow period.
Finally you don’t need to remodel the house whole house. HGTV always seems to show a couple who wants to rearrange the walls and change rooms. There are plenty of houses out there in the East Valley, keep looking you will find one that fits your needs.

After a long career in political consulting Dean transitioned to real estate and has not looked back. Dean is one of the sick ones who enjoys fighting with banks to get short sales approved and to help homeowners avoid foreclosure. Dean also loves making videos on the subject.
“A house with the walls in the right place.” A great turn of a phrase! A nice change from, “Great floorplan!”, “Nice layout.” I’m using it.
